Recently sacked South Sudan defence minister was a “victim of her own achievements”, her party Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) has said.
Cabinet Affairs Minister Martin Elia Lomuro said President Salva Kiir sacked Angelina Teny so he could hire someone who could take orders unquestionably.
The office of the First Vice-President Riek Machar said it was Mrs Teny’s “commitment and consistent efforts” that led to the graduation of the first batch of a unified army.
“If it was about the performance of Hon Angelina, had it not been for her hard work and commitment to peace, the necessary Unified Forces would not have graduated.”
President Kiir and Mr Machar have had several disagreements that have threatened to derail a 2018 peace deal that ended a five-year civil war which killed hundreds of thousands and displaced millions.
Unifying their forces was one of the contentious proposals, but despite progress it still remains an issue that divides the two leaders.
